Monkey Shoulder Blended Malt is an expression from the William Grant & Sons family. As a blended malt (also known as pure malt or previously, vatted malt) it is a marriage of only single malts, no grain whiskey added (as opposed to blended whisky or blended scotch). The 3 single malts that comprise Monkey Shoulder come from Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie (not available in the US)
The term 'monkey shoulder' harks back to whisky making heritage. It’s a reference to a condition that maltmen sometimes picked up while working long shifts, turning the barley by hand. It had a tendency to cause their arm to hang down a bit like a monkey’s, so they nicknamed it 'monkey shoulder'.
